Though the interest in exercising and fitness and opening up of clubs, gyms etc. for the purpose may seem to be a new trend it is not actually so. A whole range of holistic exercises has been traditionally handed down to us over the years. These traditional exercises emphasize on bringing about perfect harmony of the body and mind. They have kept generations of our predecessors fit and fine and can certainly take care of our health too if given a chance.
About traditional exercise forms
Traditional exercises most often refer to the exercises practiced in Asian countries since times immemorial. Yoga from India and tai chi from China are the most common of traditional exercise types. Some martial art forms traditionally practiced have also been doubled up as exercise in recent times. Kung Fu, Karate and Judo are Oriental martial arts, which provide good exercising too. Evolved and modified versions of some ancient exercise forms are also becoming immensely popular worldwide.
Yoga is an Indian system of exercising and bringing about a balance between body organs, mind and the soul. The word 'Yoga' itself means union. Hence, the objective of fostering a union of the individual with the limitless reservoir of cosmic strength and energy is pursued by Yoga. The Yoga exercises have evolved over centuries of spiritual quest. They include all kinds of exercises from breathing (aerobic) exercises to those pertaining to increasing blood circulation and toning up various organs and getting rid of various diseases of the bones, muscles and joints.
Tai chi or tai chi chuan is a traditional Chinese conditioning exercise. It is basically a soft style martial art unlike the hard martial art styles, which use a degree of tension in the muscles. It induces relaxation in the muscular system and promotes all round health and longevity. Tai chi involves slow repetitive activity, which promotes the internal circulation processes - breathing, blood circulation, and lymph movement and facilitates body heat regulation and peristalsis.
Benefits of traditional exercises
The traditional exercises and various derivations of these are coming up as specialized exercises and are much recommended by physicians for numerous ailments and disorders. Daily practicing of these can quite well assure freedom from the diseases. Of course dieting and rest are important too. Unless these are incorporated in the fitness regimen together with traditional exercises the best health results cannot be obtained.
